El Rancho Azul

Watson, Dale, performer, composer.

CD U WATSON

"If you've heard Dale Watson once or twice in nearly two decades of recording and touring, then you know how you feel about his work. His sound is devoted to hardcore, old-school, honky tonk country music. The man has stood on his principles and has invested his heart and soul in writing great songs whether they be hard-drinking or truck-driving songs, dancefloor stompers, or barroom ballads. El Rancho Azul is Watson's second record with the Red House label, a company well known for its releases by contemporary folk artists and singer/songwriters, not so much for country music devotees." ~ Thom Jurek

Blessed or damned

Watson, Dale.

CD U WATSON

"Blessed or Damned pretty much picks up where Watson's 1995 debut, Cheatin' Heart Attack, left off. He pines for "A Real Country Song" on modern radio, sings praises for his adopted state on "That's What I Like About Texas" (a good-natured duet with Johnny "Whiskey River" Bush), and wonders at the fate of his chosen musical genre on the moving title track. Watson may have no surprise ace in the hole on Blessed or Damned, but it's nonetheless a solid hand of fresh, invigorating material." ~ Kurt Wolff

Spanning newer acts like Death Grips to longtime collaborators like Matthew Herbert, Bastards gathers the most striking reworkings of Biophilia's songs.

Acoustic at the Ryman

Band of Horses (Musical group)

CD MA BAND OF

Performed by Band of Horses at The Ryman April 27th and 28th, 2013.

Run River North

Run River North (Musical group)

CD MA RUN RIV

The full-length self-titled debut album ventures further into effervescent rock anchored with a down-home aesthetic. The songs ebb and flow with optimism, traversing emotional and musical landscapes. Their music explores the ever-shifting search for self, from the energetic indie-rock interludes to the lonesome guitar strums, always asking the question: Is home a place or is it the people in your life?

An awesome wave

Alt-J (Musical group)

CD MR ALTJ

Named after the Mac command also used as a mathematical equation to show change, formed while studying fine art at university, and prone to throwing in the odd geometric reference within their lyrics, there are signs that Cambridge-based quartet Alt-J might be a little bit too clever for their own good.

Rogue's gallery pirate ballads, sea songs, & chanteys.

CD L ROG817

While the marketing insanity for Pirates of the Caribbean II continues to echo in the popular mindset, this whopping yet seemingly near-underground document -- born from the minds of the film's director, Gore Verbinski, his pal Johnny Depp, and Anti-Epitaph label boss (and Verbinski buddy) Brett Gurewitz -- may end up as a lasting contribution to the populace at large without them even knowing it. Any way you hoist it, Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys is a treasure trove of the beautiful, the weird, the arcane, and the dangerous.

Hospitality

Hospitality (Musical group)

CD M HOSPITA

The angular, intricate, and intelligent compositions of Hospitality signal a sophisticated new pop voice. Singer Amber Papini's idiosyncratic songwriting coupled with the band's rich arrangements on their self-titled debut explore youth, New York, and the bittersweet commingling of past and present in a way that feels just right, right now.

Wildewoman

Lucius (Musical group)

CD MA LUCIUS

Rolling Stone says "Sixties girl-group sounds inform lots of indie rock these days. But it rarely sounds as fresh or thrilling as Brooklyn’s Lucius."

Fun stuff!

Same trailer, different park

Musgraves, Kacey.

CD U MUS8029

Musgraves showed an intelligent, careful writing style that is as pointed as it is poignant, and even though the song seems to skewer small-town country life, it does it without malice or agenda, and is really more just telling it true than anything else, a trait that ought to be treasured in Nashville but usually isn't. Musgraves has a sense of humor, too, and all of these traits add up to make Same Trailer Different Park more than a collection of songs just aiming for the country charts.

Gorilla Manor

Local Natives (Musical group)

CD MA LOC42

Local Natives fill their debut album with soaring harmonies, dreamy orchestral melodies, and throbbing tribal beats, creating a unique indie rock sound that is all their own.

It had been startling and disappointing to me to find out that story books had been written by people,
that books were not natural wonders, coming up of themselves like grass.
