The Nysether Family Collection, part of the More to Explore Endowment, expands and enhances the basic collections of Sno-Isle Libraries. Brothers Mark and Brad Nysether and their families established the fund in honor of their parents, Eldon and Shirley Nysether. Historic photos of Washington State book Historic photos of Washington State
Washington State has a rich history. Known for its stunning natural beauty and diversity, Washington was populated for centuries by a large number of Native American tribes. Explored by British sea captains in the late eighteenth century, the region was opened in the early nineteenth century with the aid of explorers Lewis and Clark. With the coming of the railroads, cities such as Seattle, Tacoma, and Spokane grew rapidly, while other communities sprouted up around the state. From coal mining in King County and logging in the deep forests, to farming in the Palouse and fishing on the Columbia, everyday men and women attempted to carve a living. Historic Photos of Washington State provides a compelling visual record of this past. Selected from several archival collections, these photographs include a number of images from two of Washington s best-known photographers, brothers Edward and Asahel Curtis. Published in striking black-and-white, these images reveal the history of what has become one of the most intriguing states in the nation. .

Hood Canal book Hood Canal
Fjord-like Hood Canal channels beneath the snowcapped Olympic National Park, creating a summer paradise of warm days and inspiring scenery as well as a haven for marine life and watercraft. For eons, Twana Indians crisscrossed in canoes that sliced through water like salmon. The canal’s first tourist, Captain Vancouver, sailed a launch down the scenic route in 1792. For the next century, a mosquito fleet of tugboats, stern-wheelers, fishing boats, and barges ferried the men who came for logging or land. By 1889, lumberman and legislator John McReavy promoted Union City as “Venice of the Pacific.” In the 20th century, canal use shifted from logging to recreation as wealthy Easterners, San Francisco expatriates, and artists founded hunting lodges, fishing resorts, and even an artist colony. The Navy Yard Highway introduced automobile tourism, and new resorts, including Alderbrook, soon dotted the shoreline. After World War II, families bought summer homes and ski boats. Now, in the 21st century, kayaks and personal watercraft skim across the waters, and the canal is more popular than ever.
