Courageous Kids

Throughout childhood, there are opportunities to be brave - jumping off a diving board, speaking up when a friend is being bullied and attending a new school. Just in the past year, kids have shown immense courage as they've learned how to cope, and sometimes even thrive, during a pandemic. Having courage helps children to persevere against challenges, and in the process it raises their self-esteem.

Here are a few ideas for how parents and caregivers can help children show courage:

  • Make sure your kids understand what courage is.
  • Use everyday situations for children to demonstrate courage.
  • Praise and affirm kids when they show courage.
  • Use mistakes as learning opportunities.
  • Be a source of support for children.
  • Teach kids that sometimes asking for help takes courage.
