We "wood" love to share an update on your new Lake Stevens Library!
The first deliveries of an eco-friendly material called cross-laminated timber (CLT) arrived recently. Think of CLT as giant panels made from layers of wood stacked in alternating directions. CLT is the perfect choice for the library because it's highly sustainable and environmentally friendly. Here’s why it's so great:
- Renewable: Made from wood harvested from sustainably managed forests in the Pacific Northwest.
- Energy Efficient: Takes less energy to produce than concrete or steel and maintains stable indoor temperatures, which reduces energy consumption and cost.
- Carbon Benefits: Emits less carbon dioxide during manufacturing and locks away carbon already absorbed by the trees, keeping it out of the atmosphere.
- Strong and Fast: Durable, fire-resistant, and allows for faster construction since panels are made off-site.
Neighbors may see cranes on site moving these large CLT panels into place over the next few weeks. We're thrilled to be using this smart, green material throughout the design, which will add a beautiful, natural warmth to the library and honor our history as a mill town.
The two-story, 15,000-square-foot building in the Chapel Hill neighborhood is on track for completion in spring 2026.
