Volunteer at Sno-Isle Libraries

Welcome Volunteers!

Sno-Isle Libraries welcomes volunteers of all ages* and walks of life.

Our volunteers contribute their unique talents, skills and knowledge to enhance Sno-Isle Libraries' goal to be a community doorway to reading, resources, and lifelong learning.

Whether it's a short term project, or a regularly scheduled task, volunteers work to enrich our community libraries programs and services throughout Snohomish and Island counties.

*Age 13 & under must be supervised by a parent/guardian
at all times while performing volunteer duties.

How to Apply

  1. Obtain a Volunteer Application from your local library or by calling 360-651-7003.

  2. Obtain a a Background Check Form, which is also available from your library.

  3. Fill out the application as completely as possible.

  4. Return completed paperwork to your local community library or mail to:

Sample Volunteer Activities

Volunteering at the library offers enjoyable work as well as the satisfaction of knowing how much your efforts benefit your community.

It requires a commitment of your time, usually on a regular schedule, plus participation in some basic orientation and training.

There are many volunteer opportunities available at Sno-Isle Libraries. The tasks will vary depending on the community library, each one has its own needs.

These are sample volunteer activities, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator at your local library for a list of volunteer opportunities currently available.


Materials Search

Responsibilities: Assist the library staff with finding missing materials and materials requested by library patrons. Return list of items not found to staff member for recheck.

Sample Activities: Search library shelves for materials on a printed list of patron requests; search library shelves for materials on a printed list of missing items; display books; tidy shelves; return unshelved books to back room for sorting.


Equipment Cleaning

Responsibilities: Assist the library staff with routine cleaning of public workstations and surrounding areas.

Sample Activities: Clean computer screens and keyboards, clean public workstation areas, restock printer paper, restock scratch paper and pencils at public workstations.


Periodicals (Magazines & Newspapers) Volunteers

Responsibilities: Assist the library staff with keeping library periodicals organized and neat.

Sample Activities: Shelve back issues of periodicals, recycle newspapers older than 3 months, wash newspaper shelves, update labels on magazine shelves.


Shelf Reading

Responsibilities: Assist the library staff with keeping the collection in alpha-numerical order; check materials for condition, and keep shelves neat for easy access by patrons and staff.

Sample Activities: "Read" assigned shelves putting books in order; dusting shelves, washing books, organizing books for easy access. Shelf-reading training is provided by staff.

NEW Volunteer Opportunities

Book Sorters Needed!

We are looking for individuals to help sort books at our Marysville Service Center. Our branch libraries send tubs of books to the Service Center every day. These books are then sorted to go out the next morning to other branch libraries and into the hands of waiting library users. If you love books, this is the job for you!
All volunteers will receive training necessary to do this task. Volunteers need to be able to lift 30 pounds, read, be reliable, and not mind working in a warehouse environment. Volunteer times are: Monday, Tuesday, and/or Thursday; 3:00pm - 5:00pm.
