Rubber soul [sound recording]. More from their classic "middle period", with John's sardonic "Norwegian Wood" and nostalgic "In My Life" -- this one shows them leaving their moptop era behind.

A hard day's night [sound recording] The Beatles working under pressure and coming up with a platter of winners. You may have this image of the film as a series of chase scenes and slapstick that the Monkees later drove into the ground, but these songs indicate there was a lot more to the Beatles -- and a whole lot more to come.

Revolver [sound recording]. Freed from having to perform live, the Beatles experimented more with arrangements, and this CD shows them stretching out, with the chamber music of "Eleanor Rigby" and the early psychedelia of "Tommorrow Never Knows", along with such good-time songs as "Got to Get You Into My Life" and "Good Day Sunshine". (Oh, and note the punning title: you see, kids, when this was an LP, it was played on a turntable...)

Abbey Road [sound recording]. Though "Let It Be" was recorded before "Abbey Road", the quagmire that was "Let It Be" meant that it was released after "Abbey Road", which is too bad, because "Abbey Road" is the more fitting capper to their career. They finished at the peak of their powers.

Help! [sound recording]. If you forced me to choose a favorite Beatle LP, this one would definitely be in the Top Two. Yes, I realize later albums like "Sgt Peppers" and "Abbey Road" carry more weight culturally, but really, did you ever sit around the ol' campfire singing along to "A Day In the Life"?

Beatles for sale [sound recording]. Touring non-stop made it difficult to write new material, so this one is almost half covers. Still, you can't argue with such quality songs as "Eight Days a Week" and "I'm a Loser".

With the Beatles [sound recording]. For those of us growing up in the '60s, this album (slightly modified for the States and titled 'Meet the Beatles') was our first introduction to the Fab Four. Even though it's early days, the seeds for later songs are there: Paul's sometimes drippy romance ("Till There Was You" -- from "The Music Man"!), George's minor keys, the judicious choice of covers, and the way the voices of John & Paul blend.

The best of Rosa Passos [sound recording]. Despite the fact that this is a hodgepodge of Rosa tracks from throughout her career, there's a consistently relaxed feel to this collection of samba and MPB.
