Who can participate? Currently, official Sno-Isle Library Minecraft programs are only being offered for tweens and teens, but if you are curious and want to know more, come by during a program and chat with our staff. If there is space in the program, they would be happy to let you give Minecraft a try!
For those unfamiliar with this hugely popular game, it is simplest to describe it as “virtual Legos.” Participants find resources within the game, which can be combined (programmed) into creating various objects from food to weapons to large scale architecture. Settings can be adjusted so that one can simply build things, or face attacks from zombies and other players.
Why Minecraft at the library?
Sno-Isle Libraries’ goals for service to teens and tweens include:
Develop information and communication technology literacies – Bridging the digital divide is an important part of contemporary library services. Minecraft is an important cultural touchstone for many youth, and one that not all youth have access to. Providing opportunities for participation helps youth develop not just information and technology literacies, but cultural ones too.
Gain life skills through collaborative learning. – Minecraft has unlimited possibilities for collaborative learning, from newbies being coached by more experienced players, to groups working together on building challenges.
Prepare for workforce engagement by participating in STEAM activities. – Minecraft has great potential for STEAM skill development, helping develop visuospatial reasoning skills, non-verbal intelligence, and coding basics.
Utilize the library (in-person and online), and feel that they are part of the library community. – Adults are often concerned that youth spending too much time alone in front of screens can be problematic. While Minecraft is normally a solitary activity, when it happens in the library, participants benefit from the social aspect. Youth are able to connect the virtual and real worlds by working together in Minecraft and communicating in real life. Youth can bond over activities while learning about additional library resources.
