In Afghanistan you risk your life to sing. After thirty years of war and five devastating years of Taliban rule, pop culture is beginning to return to the country. Since 2005, millions have been tuning in to Tolo TV's wildly popular American idol-style series, Afghan star. Like its Western predecessors, people compete for a cash prize and record deal. DVD-ED 781.62 PHI4741

Over the course of a meteoric music career that spanned two turbulent decades, Phil Ochs sought the bright lights of fame and social justice in equal measure, a contradiction that eventually tore him apart. From youthful idealism to rage to pessimism, the arc of Ochs's life paralleled that of the times, and the anger, satire, and righteous indignation that drove his music also drove him to dark despair. A timely and relevant tribute to an unlikely American hero.

DVD-ED 594.58 CUT899

More accomplished masters of disguise than any chameleon, cuttlefish are able to change their skin color and their shape to blend into almost any background. They have the largest brain-to-body ratio of all invertebrates.

I recently met some cuttlefish while diving in Japan. They were really neat, but I had no idea just how amazing these things are!

Wiesler discovers that Minister Hempf has an ulterior motive in spying on this seemingly upright citizen. Wiesler's sympathies shift from the government to its people - or at least to this one particular person.

A stunningly devastating and beautiful movie. I loved it!

Trainspotting DVD Trainspotting

DVD TRA574

Four friends try to make it in the world on their own terms, turning to heroin to escape the banalities of modern-day existence.

The second film by director Danny Boyle (who later went on to do Slumdog Millionaire and 127 hours), this is a brilliant, but excruciating look at heroin addiction. Fantastic soundtrack and great acting, but painful to watch at times.

Once there, the adventure begins, with Oblio and Arrow encountering one extraordinary character after another as they make their way on their wonderful journey.
