Creator of the Salish Sea map Stefan Freelan will explore the choices and creative process that went into the creation of the map, why the map is the way it is, how it’s different from other maps of the area, and how the map contributed to the name adoption process at both the grassroots and governmental levels. He'll also present the newly updated 2023 version of the map.
Stefan Freelan is a GIS (Geographic Information System) Specialist and Instructor at the College of the Environment, Western Washington University. In addition to teaching GIS, Cartography, and GPS, he assists with academic research projects and is Co-Director of the Institute for Spatial Information and Analysis. He has a MS in Geography and a BA in Environmental Ethics. Prior to joining WWU he was a GIS Analyst as a private consultant and with local Planning Departments.
